what is slip ring?

slip ring is essential component that enable 360 degree continuous rotating transmission of electrical signals and power between stationary and rotating parts, it consists of a stationary and a rotating ring that contact each other with brushes or rollers connected to the stationary ring. The rotating ring conducts electrical signals and power from the stationary ring to the assembly mounted on it, thus ensuring uninterrupted connectivity between stationary and rotating parts.

The primary function of electric slip rings is to transfer electrical signals and power between two or more rotating parts without tangling or damaging wires that run from stationary to rotational parts. The method or mechanism of energy transfer depends on the application of slip rings. Pancake or flat slip rings are used where low height is necessary, and also they are some of the most commonly used slip rings. Fiber optic slip rings are used where the transfer of non-electric signals is necessary, while RF rotary joints are used where high-frequency data transmission is a requirement.

Flange connection
1. Align the mounting holes in the flange to mounting base and install flat washers and thread forming screws (NOT SUPPLIED) for plastic. Securely tighten screws.

  1. Route the wiring and make the necessary connections. Do not allow the wiring to restrict free rotation of the slip ring.
  2. Position a screw or dowel (not supplied) in the anti-rotation tab.

 

Shaft connection
1. Position the slip ring in the desired location and equally tighten both set screws to the shaft on each end of the union. 

  1. Route the wiring and make the necessary connections. Do not allow the wiring to restrict free rotation of the slip ring.
